Hey readers,

This year Penn State has made blogging easier for its students and its viewers to find so we are moving.  WordPress will only stay active for about one more month in order to allow most of my readers to copy and paste the link below. We are now using Movable Type which is supposed to have more variation to it so don’t be surprised when my blogs become colorful. Thank you all for your ongoing support and hopefully you will enjoy my new blogs just as much as these.

First Football Game!!

Posted by: jov5021 on: September 5, 2009

Hey readers,

Today was the opening game for Penn State’s NittanyLions. The game started at 12:00pm with fans surrounding the football stadium ready for season to finally start. Penn State played against Akron and won 31 to 7 leaving fans hopeful for the upcoming season. Penn State dominated the first half leaving their opponents at zero for the beginning of the second half. Today was also the 60thseason with Paternoon the sidelines with 44 of them leading as head coach. According to his appearance on the field today he seems to be healthy again, coaching from the sidelines unlike the end of last season.  Many students are excited to see what is going to happen this season and hoping for the best from their favorite college team.

2nd Week of school.

Posted by: jov5021 on: August 31, 2009

Hey readers,

I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend and is ready for the second week of school to start. Last week was long and boring because everyone knows the first days are composed of introducing the course and syllabus reading. No real work is really done but classes do take forever to finish because you are just sitting there listening to the rules and expectations of your professors. However, that was last week and now we have to do actual work. Now class is filled with important information that will be related to your quizzes and tests coming up so daydreaming is not acceptable anymore. Since I am a political science major I get a lot of reading and papers throughout the semester unlike math or engineermajors. I like my major but I wished I would be required to take less notes and more busy work that doesn’t put you to sleep in just 30 minutes. This week is also when the real workload begins because professors don’t want to lose anytime in class for work that can be done on your own time. I get most of my reading assignments as homework where my roommate, which is a computer engineering major, gets practice problems from most of her classes daily. Now the semester is in full gear and I hope everyone is motivated and focused on their studies over any over distraction.

First Weekend!!

Posted by: jov5021 on: August 28, 2009

Hey readers,

The first week of school has officially finished and I couldn’t be more tired. I have been falling asleep in almost all my classes and when I finished with my last class today I went directly to my dorm for a nap. I am usually very good about paying attention during lectures because I have learned that many professors do create questions straight from their lectures. However, after sleeping late all summer long and then waking up whenever I felt like it, I have yet to get my sleeping schedule right for school. For example, last night I was getting into bed around 2 o’clock in the morning but woke up the next morning around 9. Messing up my sleeping schedule one night can make me tired but this has been the same all week long. Today was the breaking point of my sleep deprivation when my professor himself shouted across the lecture hall when class finished, “Jennifer, get some sleep!!” Needless to say I was embarrassed. :(  My goal for next week is definitely getting the hours I need to at least stay up during lectures. I hope everyone enjoys their first weekend up in school and catch up with their sleep.

All-U-Day Game

Posted by: jov5021 on: August 27, 2009

Hey readers,

Two days ago I woke up at 6:20 in the morning just to get football tickets and I forgot to tell you all about my experience. If you did not know already Penn State University Park has one annual football game where they distribute football tickets to all campuses for them to sell directly to students and faculty. This football game is usually called the white-out and  it is filled with Penn State students but the tickets are limited. Tickets went on sell at 7:00 in the morning Tuesday but the line started at 4:30 in the morning. The line was already long when I got to the Reed Building at 6:45 in the morning and my friends and I were scared that the student center would run out of tickets by the time we reached the desk but lucky we were able to pay for our tickets. I have never been to a Penn State game and I couldn’t be more excited about being part of the student center on September 26. Many students have told me it is a very unique experience and worth the money because there are not many places where you can actually see that amount of spirit. Since University Park is about four hours away and many college students don’t have a car Behrend provides transportation to and from the football game for only ten dollars which allows even more students to appreciate this amazing chance. If you weren’t able to get a ticket there are still many games that are coming up this season so keep on looking and hopefully you will be part of the group who enjoys PENN STATE FOOTBALL.

First Day of School.

Posted by: jov5021 on: August 24, 2009

Hey readers,

As most of you already know today was the first day of school. I am not going to lie and say I was looking forward to it because working has never been high on my list. However, I was looking forward to having a busy schedule because it makes me feel useful but at the same time I wasn’t too excited about the amount of workload. I was glad to have some friends in my classes making them a little bit more exciting and stress free. First day as a freshmen can be stress full because you always hope to know at least one person in your class but that is usually not the case. Meeting people in class is something most freshmen have to do and in the end it would make the class easier because you can get together for study sessions.

One thing I was glad of was that my professors were all easy to listen to even if the material might get boring at one point during the semester. All professors are different and have specific ideas in what would make the class better but their ideals can sometimes clash with yours which can make it a little awkward. This semester I got lucky that they seem to know what they are teaching an they deliever it with an open mind set for different views and perspectives. One point that I really do love about Penn State Behrend is how easy it is to go to your professors for help. Office hours are perfect opportunities to get help from the professors themselves and get that individual attention that a lot crave for in a college atmosphere. One thing I would recommend to all freshmen would be to talk to your professors. It is so beneficial and easy to do.

Thank you for reading and I hope the rest of your week is exactly what you expected from college.

Move- in DAY!

Posted by: jov5021 on: August 22, 2009

Hey readers,

I just checked my Facebook and couldn’t believe the number of people waiting to move-in tomorrow. Move-in day is filled with emotions. Everyone is happy to be back on campus with friends from school but no one wants to start the work related aspect of college. I just finished packing and I can’t say I am too excited about missing people back at home but I am excited about catching up with my friends up at school. I love the independence that comes along with living on my own but I am not looking forward to missing family reunions. Packing up all your belongings is also not my favorite part of leaving Miami because I am always worried I missed something important behind.

Nevertheless, school is coming and I can’t stop all the good and bad from stopping so I am going to make the best out of it. I hope everyone that is flying or driving up to school the best of luck. It can be hard to stay focus on the road after long hours of no sleep but be smart and safe.

I will see everyone at PENN STATE!

One week away.

Posted by: jov5021 on: August 15, 2009

Hey readers,

One week from today I will already be on Penn State grounds. I can’t believe how fast time has gone and for those incoming freshmen a few days is all you have. If you are living on campus for your first year of college you are usually given more days to settle in compared to upperclassmen. In Penn State it is called “Welcome Week” which is dedicated to freshmen all over campus in making the beginning of college a little bit easier. I remember last year when I pulled up in front of Almy Hall with all my stuff packed inside my car and receiving some of the best assistance from students themselves. By the time I received my room keys and headed to take the first look of my dorm my belongings where already waiting for me inside. I was shocked at the speed and efficiency the students worked all day long to every freshmen walking through the doors. Welcome Week is directed by the Housing department but ran by students themselves. They create different activities for you to keep busy which can make creating new friends easier. I know many of you are excited and nervous about your first day on campus but I can honestly say that with all the help they offer it becomes one of the easiest and stress-free situations you are put through. Many of you might not know where to get the information so below I am adding a link directing you to the Welcome Week page. It provides a lot of useful information and tips so please use it to your advantage.

Too much.

Posted by: jov5021 on: August 9, 2009

Hey readers,

There other day I decided to go on-line to check what I needed to buy for this upcoming fall semester and I almost died from a heart attack. When I used to go to middle and high school I remember saying that when I got to college I would not have to waste my money on useless school supplies. I hated wasting 50 dollars on crayons, paper, tissues, and red pens just because the teachers would require them for their courses. However, as I was about to check out my books from Amazon.com I realized how 50 dollars is nothing compared to what I have to waste now for my textbooks. This semester I have lucked out and my total has been a reasonable price compared to my first fall semester. Buying textbooks for school is one things many students hate because it so much money. As I checked Facebook statues from my friends I came across one that stated,

“Fall semester used textbooks coming out at 600 dollars!!! What am I going to do??? :(

This price is very high but it is something a lot of college students see when they are ordering their books on-line. If you have yet to check out your books for this upcoming semester I recommend to do it as soon as possible. Buying the books is bad enough to not get it on time must really suck. If you have any questions concerning where to buy your books let me know and I will try my hardest to answer it. Thank you for reading.

Number 1

Posted by: jov5021 on: August 4, 2009

Hey readers,

Students come to college for all very different reasons. Most students would agree and say that they go to college to get that higher education that would help them succeed in the future. Many want to experience life on their own and want to gain the independence they crave for when living at home. However, the idea of studying would not be as fun if it only involved studying and having class everyday. Along with the education a lot of students go to college for the fun. Hanging out with friends on a regular basis is something most people at school enjoy no matter what they are up to. Penn State has been on the list of top party schools for years already but last week the Princeton Review officially placed it as the Number 1 party school in the nation. All the partying, tailgating for the well-known Nittany Lions, and socializing has paid off and many students could not be happier. Being recognized as the number 1 party school in the nation can bring many good things for student life. This news is to show those freshmen that Penn State can live up to its reputation and to be ready for what is coming their way. However gaining independence comes with responsibility and all those that let their grades fall by dedicating too much time to having fun always have a hard time getting back on their feet. “Have fun but above all don’t forget why you are there” has been the best advice I have received from my parents when leaving to college and I hope it will help you in the future.

Thank you for reading and if you have any questions please let me know.
